I don’t think I’d be able to handle all the drama. Or the random flailing over fan things. I’d probably just…quietly walk down the halls from class to class and not really talk to many people. Just like I do on Tumblr.

…Except sometimes. For no good reason at all. I would run from one end of the school to the other, screaming like a lunatic. Possibly in some state of undress. Possibly while wearing an elaborate and ridiculous costume. Possibly as the grand finale to finishing a giant wall mural.

And…no one…would notice. :D

Creating the cover for LIMINAL STATES has been an exhausting process between those of us working on the creative end of the project and my publisher. The book project almost died because of conflict revolving around the cover. I won’t delve into the specifics of that too much, but it’s worth touring the many versions of the cover that have existed throughout the project and tell the story of how we ended up with the glowing grasshopper you have seen so many times.

Okay in another fifteen minutes I will have been in the office for twelve hours so I guess I should, like, go home at some point? I don’t know when I’ll be back on as I still lack an internet at home and suchlike.

As a farewell here’s the full set of covers for the upcoming re-release of the Wolf House series. If I can make it through the rest of my life without relatives and co-workers jocularly asking me if these books have made me as rich as Stephenie Meyer or J K Rowling that will be just fucking fine.

Ugh yep time to get off the internet I’m going cranky wheeeeeeeee HI EVERYONE

I know you’re a big Sandman fan so it’s probably of interest to you to know that ‘Origins and Overtures’ is a nod to ‘Preludes and Nocturnes’ as a title!

Aflightybroad, I think that’s massively unfair to the covers and the effort it takes to get representation of your characters on your covers, as an author. Do I prefer the original ones? Of course, they are the beautiful work of a person I know. But these covers are absolutely fine, especially Last Girl, which is my favourite new cover.

I am actually super impressed with these covers because the art actually resembles main characters.

In a different author I knows case, the author had an Asian character who she was adamant be on the cover, and there was an Asian girl on the cover….except that her character was S.E Asian, and dark skinned, and the cover’s creator had blithely assumed she meant a Chinese person, and hadn’t read notes.

Are these covers perfect? No, nothing is. Do they sell the idea that this is a horror series starring messed up dirty kids? I really think they do.

I’m not talking about the characters. They look fine - the photo on Fair Game stands out to me as pretty cool, actually! It’s the way the cover designer used font and texture that gets to me. Again, let’s just talk about Fair Game for a second - check out the spacing between the ”F” and the “a.” That is an insane amoutn of distance. Why is there so much space? Because someone took a nap and didn’t bother with kerning, I assume. Roads and Crosses has the lovely choice of dark text on a dark background, which is a very creative approach to legibility. Origins and Overtures has an S stuck halfway onto the character’s face for some reason (and again, character is fine, she looks cool, I like her attitude - no comment on how she matches up to people in the book because I haven’t read them). The bizarre choice in textures makes her shirt look REAL WEIRD (that’s technical graphic design talk) and her face looks weirdly burnt out in a way i don’t think is wholly intended? maybe colors work different around her. maybe there is a reason for the spattering on the R. i don’t know.

honestly my biggest beef here is “those textures are really poorly applied.” i mean the overlaying splotchy/blotchy stuff on all the cover. it’s a fine idea! you want it to look like horror, it needs to look a little creepy and rough, yeah - it’s just … not implemented well. also the way they place the author’s name is just weird.

(the person on fire proof heart looks cool as heck, i wish the author’s name didn’t jut across her eye, just move it up a little …. PERSONAL TASTE THO. and on Last Girl with it aligning with her nostril)

and ALSO i would like to point out, i am sure this is NOT EVEN MARY’S FAULT, i know how crazy back and forthing over covers can get and it has nearly sunk good projects! there was probably a WHOLE TON of work put into these and i imagine about seven trillion revisions on each and after a certain point you just have to go “yeah this is what we’re submitting to the retailer catalogs, to hell with it” and that is fine, whatever.

ok welp just wanted to point out that i never said anything about the characters, they cool.
